Today the evocative “Nuri” pilgrimage from the Mare Vecchio district.

Today, San Sebastiano, co-patron of Avola together with Saint Venera and patron of the body of the traffic police, appears. The solemn celebrations began this morning at 7 with the ringing and firing of 21 cannon shots and with the Eucharistic celebration presided by Don Vizzini.

This evening there will be, then, the evocative race of the “Nuri” (the loyal devotees of the Saint), departing from the pier at 5 pm; at 6 pm the solemn mass will be celebrated presided by Don Sultana, in the presence of civil and military authorities.

During the celebration, as usual, Mayor Cannata will light the votive lamp of the martyr saint protector of the city and, finally, the commander of the city police will renew the act of entrustment to the patron saint

Also this year, therefore, the feast of San Sebastiano will be characterized by the pilgrimage of the “Nuri” from Mare Vecchio to the Chiesa Madre, an event that has been repeated for 4 years, but it is, in reality, an ancient tradition revived under the Cannata administration. For the city of Avola this is the first festival of the year dedicated to San Sebastiano. The appointment, in fact, is repeated also in spring.
