Even Avola will be illuminated by the “Light of Bethlehem”: tonight, starting at 6pm, a solemn Mass in the Mother Church. The peace initiative established in Linz in 1986, which has now become a heartfelt Christmas tradition in Europe and the Americas, also reaches Avola, supported by the Avola scouts of the “Avola 5” group who are based in Chiesa Madre.

Therefore, the light that comes from Bethlehem will burn in the Mother Church, where in the Church of the Nativity there has been for centuries a flame fueled by the oil donated by all the nations of the world. Every year in December, from that flame, others are lit that are spread, with the help of the scout groups, as a symbol of peace and brotherhood among peoples. Thanks to a very long human chain, the “Light” reaches parishes and communities of over 30 nations between Europe (from 1991 also in the East), the United States, Canada and South America (in 2001 it also arrived at Ground Zero in New York).

“The light of peace comes, a simple gesture that represents a symbol of brotherhood among peoples – says Archpriest don Rosario Sultana – we welcome this little flame with such profound significance into our city.” After the celebrations in the Mother Church, the procession will move up to the Frateantonio room where the light of peace will be placed on an ad hoc altar and will remain lit until the feast of Epiphany.
